At Grissom Law, we work to create estate plans, not just estate documents. The difference is the holistic approach we take in working with our clients’ CPA, financial advisor, insurance agents, nursing homes, and being partners for future needs as well. Part of our estate plan includes a document referred to as a Letter of Instruction. This Letter is a document that provides a place for you to put in the name and contact information for your CPA, financial advisor, banking institutions, investment locations, and physician. We provide space for the you to list where each important document is kept (i.e- the deed to the house in the house safe, birth certificate – safe deposit box at Wells Fargo).

The Letter of Instruction allows you to provide instructions for burial or cremation, including a specific cemetery name and directions for your funeral service. If you are entitled to any Veteran’s benefits or burial accommodations, the Letter provides a specific place for that information as well. The last page of the Letter is a blank space for you to leave any hand written notes to loved ones.

In the confusion and chaos after a loved one has passed; this Letter provides a “one-stop-shop” that allows your family to find important information easily. This Letter is not a legal document or attorney generated form, and can be (and should be) changed throughout the client’s life. There is nothing more frustrating for family than to try to juggle funeral arrangements, dig through filing cabinets, and field creditor phone calls, while mourning the passing of a loved one.

We work to make the probate process after someone passes as easy as possible for your loved ones. Providing clear instructions on your wishes, your finances, passwords, important contacts, and the location of assets and documents alleviates the burden and allows your family time to grieve and recover.

At Grissom Law we strive to provide a plan that puts you and your family at ease to help them during one of life’s most difficult circumstances. Providing documents like the Letter of Instruction is just one way that we’ve found to make the next steps a little easier after a loved one passes.
